Long ago, prior to the invention of gypsum board, walls were made by adding latts to a wall and later adding approx an inch of horsehair plaster to create a smooth finish to a wall. Plaster and how its applied has changed dramatically. Currently, blueboard is used with a skim coat of plaster to give it the final finish.
So what difference does mudding and taping provide verses plastering your walls? By using today’s products, honestly not too much. The use of gypsum board or drywall provides much strength to your walls. By using a professional Drywall company like A.V. Plaster Positives:
- Installation takes less time than taping on most projects
- More durable then taping finish
- Perfect for rehabs with uneven studs and corners, with plaster you can manipulate the lines to make straight corners
- More sound resistant than drywall
Plaster Negatives:
- Once plaster is completed, it isn’t paintable for a minimum of 72 hours
- It is more expensive than drywall finish due to it being a skilled trade and cost of materials
- When using specialty drywall such as QuietRock (sound resistant drywall), plaster can get very expensive due to extra preparation and labor
- Plaster can be considered “to echo” for some people
- More prone to cracking from changes in weather if house isn’t properly insulated, or from settling cracks

- After sanding is completed, can paint right away
- Not as expensive as plaster
- After completion, drywall is less prone to cracking due to the flexibility in the gypsum wall board

- Process takes more time than plaster on most projects
